The former England manager Reveals Priorities on Mentoring Young People Instead of Football Management

Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a comeback in football management, pointing out that it would be difficult to recreate the higher calling he experienced as head of the Three Lions.

The former coach suggested his plan to channel his attention toward engaging the youth and countering what he described as a dominant downbeat story currently existing in the country.

Exploring Fresh Opportunities Outside of Coaching

Speaking on air, the manager was questioned on talk linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Ahead of the release of his new title, his leadership-focused book, Southgate emphasized that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for young people, utilizing lessons from his period as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He believes that his journey coaching England, during which the team shifted from being strongly criticized to widely supported, holds broader applications.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Family Life and Influencing Youth

Reflecting on his role as a parent, Southgate remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Conflict

Southgate asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often emphasizes division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is scheduled to present deeper reflections on guidance and public spirit based on his remarkable career.
