The Two Fatalities Identified in the Ivy League School Attack as Authorities Press On With Search for Perpetrator.

Two students who were killed in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – while an intensive search for their shooter carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the sole person of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

Cook was vice-president of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences on social media, remarking: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”

An International Student

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a search at a Hampton Inn about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“We have a murderer out there,” said Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our city”.

The assailant began shooting inside a room in the building on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a police source told the news agency.

Law enforcement that raided the lodging recovered two firearms and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was taken into custody, the news agency reported.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private academy in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

More Condolences

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his potential.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
