While Swimmers Ran From Violence, Widely-Shared Image Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, like many others in the area, heard pops ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her home, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw told her something was wrong.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a duo who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she heard someone coming up behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was the only one running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to flee, while holding that large equipment and unshod … He moved towards something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism During Chaos

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous moments of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews treating numerous the injured.

Community Response and Assistance

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to come out of the local area, with the beach facility next to the scene of the violence becoming a temporary hospital. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, for instance entering the ocean to rescue people who were struggling.

In the days after the tragedy, messages of support circulated widely. One post shared appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “goodness will always conquer darkness”.

The group of lifeguards published a communication, noting they were “processing what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and encouragement. We are touched by the kindness directed at our responders,” the group stated. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many full-time beach safety officers, stated that the crew performed exceptionally from the second the incident commenced until late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many emotional accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a mayor.

“The team show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned beaches secure for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the atrocity of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have seen in the face of such evil.”
